Let it Rise – the History of Baking in Ballarat

From ancient Wadawurrung food traditions to the bustling bakery culture of today, this lively and hands on event uncovers Ballarat's long relationship with bread.

During the goldrush, bakers became some of the city's most prosperous workers, feeding thousands of hungry miners and helping shape a community where ovens, flour and fresh loaves were vital to survival. Seasoned performer, Amie Brulee, explores bread as a symbol of social and economic power. Touching on moments of hardship and resilience, from flour shortages and bread riots to the role of Bakery Hill and its connection to the Eureka story.

Drawing on historical accounts of local baking and eating, she brings to life the voices and experiences that built Ballarat's baking heritage. Featuring live bread making, tastings and traditional baking songs, this interactive experience celebrates the city's past while recognising its thriving contemporary baking scene and regional connections to Victorian wheat country.
