Inscape Piano Trio: The music of images

Access info

In 2016, composer and pianist Richard Chew performed a suite of piano pieces inspired by the painting The Last of England by Pre-Raphaelite Ford Madox Brown. The painting shows fellow Pre-Raphaelite Thomas Woolner and his wife taking a last look at their homeland as they leave for Australia. Chew encountered the painting in his youth in the Birmingham Art Gallery and recalled it years later when emigrating with his own family to Australia.

The program includes P.R.B., a new work written to mark the opening of this exhibition; pieces adapted for the ensemble from The Last of England piano suite; Hiraeth, a meditation on a Welsh traditional song about longing and nostalgia for an imagined past; and instrumental arrangements of Scottish and Irish traditional songs, which speak to the spiritual encounter with nature and sense of place in the landscape paintings in the Pre-Raphaelites Drawings and Watercolours exhibition.

Inscape Piano Trio consists of composer and pianist Richard Chew, Director of the Arts Academy, Federation University, international concert violinist Dunja Lavrova and acclaimed Ballarat-born cellist Lachlan Dent.
